Your Sandeels will be sent in a fish bag filled with oxygen, on ice in a polystyrene box. The sandeels are packed live but cannot be guaranteed to be live on delivery. In delivery trials survival rates are between 86%-93%. Most of your sandeels will be laying dormant on arrival and it is important that you follow our aftercare advice to keep your eels live.
Aftercare advice. You will need to keep your sandeels in natural seawater or salted RO water. If you have the facility to keep the water cool, then you should use this, (ie a cooler) as the cooler the water the better, 14 degrees is a good temperature for your eels. You can use 1/2litre bottles filled with frozen water and then add them to your bucket (or whatever you are using to store the sandeels) to keep the temperature down. These bottles will also need refreshing to maintain water temperature. For 100 eels I would advise you to have a bucket of at least 25 litres, most of my friends that use my sandeels use a brand new plastic dustbin as they can hold lots of lovely aerated water. They have a 240v aerator with two outlets, and two air stones which keeps the water very bubbly. They still have to change the water every day or so for new sea water.
Ideally this needs to be set up prior to delivery so you can get your sandeels straight into some fresh water. Don’t re-use the water they have been delivered in. The most important thing about keeping your eels alive in water is oxygen! The more the better , so have the aerator on the night before.
Your eels will take 30/40mins to start swimming in their new home, after 2/3 hours you will be able to see if there are any that are dead, net these out.
TAKING THEM FISHING
Net out however many you are going to need that trip, and put into a large bucket of fresh sea water, with a 12v aerator. Once out to sea, or on beach refresh with new sea water as often as you can, say every 30mins and they will stay wriggling till they get eaten!
