If you want to collect your Sandeels eels from me, here is my advice:

Best ways to keep your Sandeels

For me there are 2 ways to keep you eels depending on when you intend to use them.

First way- if I was picking them up in the morning and was going to use them that day and following into the next day I would use a polystyrene box with crushed ice in the bottom. I normally put 2 tea towels which have been submerged in natural seawater or salted RO water and then wrung out until almost dry. I carefully lay these over the ice, ensuring that no ice is left uncovered as if an eel (and they are wriggly little buggers) touches the ice directly they will get ice burn and will either die or not be as effective. I take a further towel (treated as above) and lay it on top of them. Place the polystyrene lid on the box, and they are normally good for up to 24-48 hours. If you don’t use all of your eels I would take the sandeels and the tea towels out of the box and replenish with new crushed ice and re-position, or if you haven’t any more crushed ice, find space in your fridge (don’t tell the mrs).

Second way- Possible the better way but it is the harder way. If you want to keep your eels alive longer than 24-48 hours, you will need to keep them in natural seawater or salted RO water. If you have the facility to keep the water cool, then you should use this as the cooler the water the better. You can use 1/2litre bottles filled with frozen water and then add them to your bucket (or whatever you are using to store the sandeels) to keep the temperature down. These bottles will also need refreshing to maintain water temperature. If you are lucky enough to be out in a boat refresh your water every 20minutes as they will stay in good cold sea water for substantially longer than on ice. The most important thing about keeping your eels alive in water is oxygen! The more the better, when I transport my eels they are in a soup of bubbles. Some of the battery operated 12V aerators are ok if your using sea water is it already contains oxygen, just don’t forget to keep refreshing the water regularly. If you do all of the above your eels should stay alive until they get eaten by a bass! However if you cannot do this, go back to the first way!
